Learning English is essential to achieve the purpose of communication. Related to fulfilling communication purposes, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) added transactional interaction text as one of the essential competencies that must be taught in school. Transaction interaction text shows how a real-life conversation might be going on, so students may use it as a reference to create conversation. The textbook is a common media used in teaching and learning. It is well known to be used by teachers and students to achieve successful learning goals. A theme may develop from conversation text as the information flow between the exchange of theme and rheme happens. This development is called thematic progression. According to Paltridge (2006), thematic progression is categorized into reiteration, zig-zag, and multiple. The objectives of this study are to find out the theme applied in transactional interaction text written in the seventh-grade English textbook and to know the thematic progression used in transactional interaction text written in the seventh-grade English textbook. This study used qualitative research. To gather the data, the writer used documentation. The data were collected from Bahasa Inggris When English Rings a Bell textbook for seventh-grade junior high school. This textbook was published in 2017 by Kemendikbudristek. In analyzing the data, the writer used theories of Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2014) for theme analysis and Paltridge's (2006) for thematic progression analysis. This study found that from 55 transactional interaction texts, the themes that appeared in this study are topical, interpersonal, and textual. The topical theme was found unmarked and marked, the interpersonal theme shown as vocative and finite, while textual themes appeared as continuatives, conjunction, and conjunctive adjuncts. Following Paltridge's (2006) theory, thematic progression like reiteration, zigzag, and multiple patterns were also found in this study. After analyzing the theme and thematic progression in transactional interaction text, the writer found how information flows may help students understand and create conversation in real life. Not only that, the writer found that some texts do not have thematic progression. A good text should have thematic progression to make the text coherent and keep the information in the text flows. It is way wiser to add coherent texts in the textbook.
