Communication is one of important aspect of human being. Pragmatics offers Grice’s cooperative principle to make communication successful. However, people sometimes break the maxim by giving more or less information, being irrelevant, something false and being obscure which name as flouting of maxim. It also happens on the dialogue of movie, which is representation of human communication. The writer uses Despicable Me 3 movie to be researched in order to analyze flouting maxim in the characters’ utterances. The study's objectives are to know the types of flouting maxims in the Despicable Me 3 Movie and the most dominant of flouting maxim in the Despicable Me 3 Movie. In addition to it had pedagogical implications for English Language Teaching. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. Furthermore, the technique of collecting data is documentation where the transcript of Despicable Me 3 movie by Pierre Coffin & Kyle Balda. The writer analyzed the types of flouting maxims based on Grice’s theory of cooperative principle. Then, to analyze the data the writer uses Krippendorff (2004) content analysis. The result shows there are 17 flouting maxim found in the Despicable Me 3 movie. They are divided into 7 times flouting maxim of quantity or 41,18% of total findings, 1 time flouting maxim of quality or 5,88% of total finding, 8 times or 47,06% flouting maxim of relation, and 1 time flouting maxim of manner or 5,88% of total finding. Moreover, the total finding of the research shows the most dominant flouting maxim is flouting maxim of relation with 8 times or 47,06% of the total findings. The understanding flouting maxim in conversation in the movie is suitable to improve the students’ communicative competence which is viewed as the ultimate aim of oral English teaching will be increased.
