SKRIPSI PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF EMOJI USED IN ONLINE CLASSROOM INTERACTION IN ENGLISH DEPARTMENT UNIVERSITAS TIDAR

Communication is the key of human interaction. it can happen with or without any words at all. The communication which not use words call as nonverbal communication. As the effect of Covid-19 pandemic, the interaction of human goes through online media. It also happens in classroom interaction which may cause misunderstanding between the sender and the receiver. As the development of technology, the miscommunication problem could solve by the presence of emoji facility. Emoji can show the user expression in the form of facial expression. The writer is interested in analysing the function of emoji in online classroom interaction through pragmatic analysis. The aims of this study are (1) to find out the emoji that used in classroom interaction (2) to know the pragmatic function of emoji and (3) to find out what emoji’s function which is mainly used in online classroom interaction. The subject of this study was 25 students and 1 lecture of English Department in Universitas Tidar. Descriptive qualitative study was used in this study to help the writer describe the finding more explicitly. The writer used questionnaire, documentations, and observation as the instruments of his study. After that, the writer analysed the result of the data using Sugiyomo (2014) theory, which was validated by using investigator validation according to Denzin (2009). This study showed that there were 52 types of emoji used by the lecture and the student of English Department Universitas Tidar. It also has the function like showing the user’s feeling (attitude or emotion signals), add the user’s feeling or emotion (attitude or emotion intensity enhancer), thanking, apologizing, asking, joking, communicate the opposite of what the user uttered, cut in the topic, giving attention, showing agreement, and showing the user’s understanding about the information given. For the functions which mainly used was attitude or emotion intensity enhancer that means the participants mostly used emoji to show their deep feeling during the online classroom interaction.
