SKRIPSI AN ITEM ANALYSIS ON DISCRIMINATION INDEX OF ENGLISH SUMMATIVE TEST IN SMP N 2 GRABAG

Evaluation is the process of collecting data to determine the success of an activity. The standard tools used in evaluating learning must have good test criteria, namely validity and reliability. The method that can be used to test the quality is item analysis. The discrimination index is part of the item analysis to distinguish low and high-achievement students. The school or English teacher at SMP N 2 Grabag rarely carry out item analysis in practice, especially on the discrimination index. Therefore, this study was intended to analyze the discrimination index of English summative test in the seventh-grade at SMP N 2 Grabag. This study used the descriptive quantitative method. The numerical data on the English summative test items at SMP N 2 Grabag was collected, analyzed, and then described using the content analysis technique. The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel with the formula by Heaton (1988) to determine the discrimination index. Based on the findings and discussion, it can be resumed that the difficulty index on the multiple-choice question item is 12% good, 48% satisfactory, 36% poor, and 4% very poor. Then, on the complex multiple-choice question item is 40% excellent, 20% good, and 40% satisfactory. Third, on the matching question items is 20% excellent, 20% good, 20% satisfactory, and 40% poor. On the short essay question items is 20% good, 40% satisfactory, and 40% poor. The last, on the essay question items is 60% good, and 40% satisfactory. Therefore, 60% of the test items in multiple-choice, matching, and short essay questions can distinguish high and low-ability students. For the types of complex multiple-choice and essay questions, 100% of the test items can distinguish high and low-ability students. That is because the test items are in the excellent, good and satisfactory categories.
