SKRIPSI THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ READING STRATEGIES AND READING COMPREHENSION ON NARRATIVE TEXT OF THE NINTH GRADE OF SMPN 3 MAGELANG

Reading involves both reading strategies and reading comprehension. Both play crucial roles in the process of reading. One part of reading that students develop in English learning is reading comprehension, particularly concerning narrative texts. Students often use reading strategies to help them understand the information in the text. According to the reasons, the objectives of this study were to determine the most dominant reading strategies that utilized by the ninth-grade students at SMPN 3 Magelang during the reading learning process and to determine the correlation between students’ reading strategies and reading comprehension of the narrative text of the ninth grade of SMPN 3 Magelang.
The writer used quantitative research as a research approach. The applied research design of the study was a correlational study. All students of the ninth grade of SMPN 3 Magelang academic year 2022/2023 were involved as population. Purposive sampling was the sampling technique, with 232 students as the population and 47 as the sample. In collecting the data, the writer employed a questionnaire for reading strategies and a test for reading comprehension of narrative text. The writer used Pearson Product Moment in SPSS 25 version to analyze the data.
The findings of this study showed that based on the category, the students’ dominant type of reading strategies was Problem-Solving Reading Strategies (PROB), and the mean score was 3.9170, categorized as “high” level. Meanwhile, the reading comprehension test result indicated that students had good reading comprehension levels, with a mean score of 83.87. Furthermore, Ha was approved since the Pearson Product Moment result’s p-value (0.013) was lower than 0.05 and the coefficient of correlation was 0.361. It was determined that there is a low significant correlation between students’ reading strategies and reading comprehension on the narrative text of the ninth grade of SMPN 3 Magelang.
Referring to the research result, the writer would like to suggest that students explore various reading strategies in reading English texts. Students may examine various narrative texts and pay attention to information that includes many challenging vocabularies to improve their reading comprehension. In addition, the teacher should explain the usage of reading strategies in the English learning process, especially in learning English text. The writer expects this study can be helpful for future studies exploring reading strategies and reading comprehension especially in the narrative text.
