Speaking is one of the four fundamental skills in English. Speaking skill is needed for learners while performing in front of the public. Speaking, which emphasizes communicating in English, makes this skill challenging to apply in everyday life, especially for EFL learners. Some people easily understand the message conveyed in English when the conversation occurs but they needed help answering in English. Unfortunately, some students still need to practice speaking during the teaching and learning process, affecting their fear of making mistakes when asked to speak in English. It also happens to high school students. Using attractive teaching and learning media will help students overcome their speaking problems. The writer is interested in studying students’ perception on using YouTube as learning media for teaching speaking through narrative text. The subject of this study was 36 tenth-grade students at SMA N 3 Magelang in the academic year 2021/2022. A descriptive qualitative approach was used by employing observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation as the data collection techniques. The writer handed out the questionnaire, which consisted of 20 items, to 36 respondents and did the interview with six interviewees. Then, the data results were analyzed based on the theory of Miles, Huberman, & Saldana (2014) and were validated using data validation according to Norman (2007). This study showed that the respondents gave favorable judgments about using YouTube as learning media for teaching speaking in high school. Most of them perceived the advantages of learning speaking skills through the YouTube application. The implementation of YouTube as learning media for teaching speaking through narrative text has given help to the students particularly. Most respondents gave favorable judgments on using YouTube as learning media for education, speaking through narrative text. Most of them perceived the benefits of YouTube as learning media in speaking skills. Nonetheless, there are still some things that could be improved, such as the need for an internet connection while accessing YouTube and slow feedback from the teacher. The students’ challenge was resolved using YouTube as learning media for teaching speaking through narrative text.
