Analysis of Speech Function Utterances In Gill’s YouTube Video : Teaching English Writing Practices of High School Education are motivated by the frequently of the misundestanding happens between teacher and students while English teaching and learning process. The categories of the speech function contained on the video can be used as the references by the teacher to teach more effective in teaching English language in high school education.
The objectives of this study are: (1) To explore the categories of the speech function used in the YouTube video “ Learn English Grammar: What’s the difference between Active and Passive?” by Gill (2) To figure out the dominant speech function used in the YouTube video “ Learn English Grammar: What’s the difference between Active and Passive?” by Gill? (3) To discover the common implementations study of the speech function on the YouTube video “ Learn English Grammar: What’s the difference between Active and Passive?” by Gill in Teaching Writing in high school education. The basic theory used in this research were using theory from Holmes and Wilson (2017). The type of the research belongs to qualitative research. The data source for this research was using the transcript from YouTube video titled “ Learn English Grammar: What’s the difference between Active and Passive?” by Gill ?. the form of the data are the sentence and the clause containing speech function. The data collection technique used is documentation.
The result of the findings show there are 194 data from the transcript with the following description. There are 9 (4.63%) data of instrumental, 46 (19.07%) data of declarative, 10 (5.15%) data of imperative, 2 (1.03%) data of interrogative, 97 (50%) data of representational, 4 (2.06%) data of interactional, 18 (9.277%) data of personal, 6 ((3.09%) data of heuristic 11 (5,6%) data of metalinguistic. The most dominant speech function is representational speech function.
The results of this study can be used as a reference in English teaching and learning in writing class conducted by the teacher. Students can follow the instruction clearly. Furthermore, this research can be developed by the other researcher.
