As a foreign language, the English language learning is challenging to learn. Many students complain that they are challenged to learn the English language. Because of that, all the students need strategies to support the learning process to understand the materials optimally. To overcome the difficulties in writing, students need strategies. The strategies that are used directly in dealing with a new language are called direct strategies. Direct strategies are beneficial for students because they help store and recover information. These strategies help learners produce language even when there is a knowledge gap. They also help understanding and using the new languages. The students can use it to conduct their writing in the English language. The purposes of this research are (1) To know the types of direct language learning strategies in writing analytical exposition text used by the eleventh graders of Salaman 1 Senior High School. (2) To know how direct language learning strategies in writing an analytical exposition text is implemented by the eleventh graders of Salaman 1 Senior High School. This is a qualitative study. The questionnaires and interviews are used to collect the data. Three direct strategies are classified. Those are memory strategies, cognitive strategies, and compensation strategies. The writer observed the eleventh graders MIPA 3 at Salaman 1 Senior High School. There are 36 students participated in this study. The results showed that the students generally used memory strategies with a score of 3.73. The students used memory strategies to memorize the words used in writing an analytical exposition text. Cognitive strategies reached a score of 3.38, which was categorized as sometimes used. The students write an analytical exposition text many times. Moreover, compensation strategies were categorized as generally used with a score of of 3.65. The students used compensation strategies to keep continuing in writing analytical exposition texts. They replaced the difficult words with similar words or synonyms. Thus, the highest strategies that students used were memory strategies. In addition, the students implemented all the strategies to make them fluent in writing analytical exposition text.
