The Merdeka curriculum contains project-based learning guided Pancasila student profiles. Its process focuses on student activities or activities in learning. Therefore, activities in the process of implementing project-based learning are important. However, the application of projects in learning still has difficulties. Learning English as a foreign language is also a complicated process. To implement project-based learning better, it is necessary to explore EFL students' more specific difficulties related to implementing the project in English as a foreign language learning. There are two focuses of this study. First, it is to find out EFL students' attitudes toward project-based learning. Second, it is to know the challenges EFL students face during the English learning process in a project-based learning environment. The writer used Blumenfeld et al. (1991) theory to conduct the study. This qualitative study is classified as a case study. The subject of this study is 32 seventh grade EFL students in SMPN 1 Sruweng. In conducting the research, data was collected through questionnaires and observation. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Sadana's (2014) theory. The writer used methodological triangulation to ensure the data trustworthiness. Based on the responses of 32 students to the questionnaire and observations, the result shows that EFL students' attitudes toward project-based learning which included three aspects, received positive responses. On the behavioral aspect of language attitude, only 3 out of 10 statements received a negative response. The second aspect relates to the emotional aspect of language attitude; out of 5 statements, only 1 gets a negative response. Besides, 2 out of 5 statements received negative responses for the cognitive aspect of language attitude. From all aspects, as many as 20 statements, 14 received positive responses. In conclusion, the three aspects of language attitudes responses of EFL students toward project-based learning environment are good. However, there are challenges related to pronunciation, translating, answering questions, and understanding instructions from the teacher. To sum up, learning English in a project-based learning environment is challenging for EFL students. The writer suggests that English teachers monitor students' progress at each project stage by asking questions about students' challenges. To EFL students, the writer suggests that students can be more active in asking questions and should never be afraid to try to answer or express opinions.
