SKRIPSI SPEECH EVENTS OF CLASSROOM INTERACTIONS IN A VIDEO COMPILATION OF C-13-BASED ENGLISH LEARNING IN INDONESIAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS

In English teaching and learning, the students are expected to interact in the classroom, their topics, which were intertwined with speech events, should have been related to the English learning material in which they could be stimulated to the learning goals according to 2013 Curriculum. However, the main problem is that teacher and students do not implement it well as it was exemplified by model schools. Therefore, introducing the concept of speech event analysis in classroom interaction will be very beneficial in helping teacher and students to analyze their students’ language behavior more systematically in the teaching and learning process and might improve their students’ communicative competence in the future. This study has two aims. The first aim is to identify the kinds of speech events in the classroom interactions in the video compilation of C-13-based English Learning in Indonesian senior high schools. The second aim is to determine scene, key, participants, message form, message content, act sequence, rules of interaction and norms of interpretation of the classroom interactions occurred in the video compilation of C-13- based English Learning in Indonesian senior high schools. This study uses a qualitative research design to describe and analyze the data appropriately. The data in this study was taken from the conversations found in the video compilation of C-13-based English Learning of Indonesian senior high schools. Furthermore, the theory about speech event and its components developed by Saville-Troike (2003) was used to analyze the data. The study shows that there are 15 kinds of speech events in the classroom interactions in the video compilation of C-13-based English Learning in Indonesian senior high schools, especially in SMA N 1 Harapan Medan and SMA N 1 Cikalongwetan; those are orientation, apperception, giving reference, classroom discussion, group discussion, group practicing, giving suggestion, conclusion, motivation, performing a talk show, performing online chatting, performing a game, performing a talk show, reviewing students’ homework, and performing chatting, roleplaying and feedback from the students from other groups. Determining its component is helpful to analyze the progress of English teaching and learning by looking at the participants to know the most dominant students who are proactive in the learning process; the message form and content to acknowledge the main material of the lesson meeting; the act sequence to broader the knowledge of variety of teaching and learning process for senior high school students; norms of interpretation to comprehend the main point, aim and objective that should be reached and targeted optimally.
