In 2017, the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia launched the revision of a textbook for the eleventh graders entitled Bahasa Inggris. The book contains various reading texts to improve students' reading skills. However, understanding the reading text is not easy for all students. The students still have difficulty understanding the meaning of complex or unfamiliar words because of low vocabulary and lack of knowledge of affixes, especially affixes that can change the meaning and parts of speech. This study aims to identify the type and the dominant one of derivational affix in reading texts of the textbook. The study applies descriptive qualitative to analyze the derivational affixes items found in the reading texts of the textbook. The data were taken from an English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris for the eleventh graders. The writer collected the data through documentation within the textbook and got eleven reading texts to be analyzed. Then, the writer analyzed data results based on Plag’s (2002) theory. Based on the result of this study, there were 372 derivational affixes found in the texts in students’ textbooks. It is indicated that two types of derivational affixes were found in the textbook. They are derivational suffixes (94.3%) and derivational prefixes (0.54%). Derivational suffix includes several types, such as noun suffix which appears 164 times (44,1%); adjective suffixes which appear 112 times (30,1%); adverb suffix which appears 73 times (19,6%) and verb suffix which appears two times (0,5%). The second is a derivational prefix that occurs 21 times (5,7%). It consists of a negative prefix which occurs 20 times (5,4%), and a quantify prefix which only happens once (0,3%). Then, the writer also found the dominant type of derivational affixes found in the textbook. It was a derivational suffix that had a percentage of 94.3 %. The writer suggests teachers guide the students to understand the text, especially one that might contain derivational affixes. Here, the teacher should realize each type of derivational affix and apply it in the teaching reading. The writer also suggests that students become more aware of using affixes, especially derivational ones, in spoken and written English. While for future researchers, it will be better to research more about the study of derivational affixes to use this research as a resource.
