SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING THE ASSESSMENT TYPES IN THE ENGLISH TEXTBOOK ENTITLED “ENGLISH FOR SMK 3”

In the English teaching and learning process, a textbook becomes essential because it provides an adequate resource of materials and assessments where the teacher can measure the knowledge and skill of the students through the tasks. Nowadays, the assessment types in a textbook can be various. There must be a balanced portion of language skills to help the students to achieve the required competencies. This study will describe the assessment types presented in English textbooks for vocational high schools based on Brown's theory (2004). The study was conducted to answer two research objectives. They were to find out the assessment types presented in the English textbook for vocational high school entitled "English for SMK 3” and the type of assessment that appears the most in the textbook. This study used a descriptive qualitative method that employed a content analysis approach. The writer analyzed the tasks in the seven units of the textbook and categorized them into the types of language skill assessment according to Brown (2004). In the data validation process, an expert in the language assessment field validated the data result of the analysis. After analyzing the textbook, the writer concluded that 14 types of assessment are provided. They are intensive listening, selective listening, imitative speaking, intensive speaking, responsive speaking, interactive speaking, extensive speaking, perceptive reading, selective reading, interactive reading, extensive reading, imitative writing, intensive writing, and responsive & extensive writing. The assessment type that appears the most in the textbook is selective reading, with 51 tasks or 24.52% of all the assessment types that appear in the textbook.
