Grammar plays an essential part in learning English for mastering the four language skills. However, the tenth graders of SMAN 3 Magelang still face some difficulties in mastering grammar, especially simple past tense. They frequently believe that grammar is difficult and hence avoid it. Therefore, the students have low learning motivation in grammar learning. Nowadays, using technology in the teaching and learning process can make learning fun and attractive for students. Thus, to address the issue, the writer conducted a research to enhance the students learning motivation and simple past tense grammar mastery by implementing the use of technology named Voscreen.
This study aims to know how great is the use of Voscreen increase the students’ learning motivation and to know how great is the improvement of the simple past tense grammar mastery of the students who are taught by using Voscreen. The writer conducted a classroom action research (CAR) in three stages: Pre Cycle, Cycle I and Cycle II. The subject of the research is X4 students of SMAN 3 Magelang. Test and non-test techniques (observation, questionnaire, documentation) were used to collect the data. Then, the data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques.
There is a remarkable improvement of students’ learning motivation to learn simple past tense grammar mastery after the writer taught them using Voscreen. It can be seen in the observation result is increased from 48% to 64%, and it becomes 76%. The use of Voscreen also can increase the students’ simple past tense grammar mastery. In Pre-Cycle test, the average score of simple past tense grammar test is 58.8. After Voscreen is applied, the students’ average score in Cycle I test reaches 64.0, and it has improved to 72.9 in cycle 2 test. So, the total improvement from Pre-Cycle test to Cycle II test is 14.1 points. It can be concluded that the used of Voscreen can increase the students’ learning motivation and give the significant improvement of their simple past tense grammar mastery. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers use Voscreen as an alternative media in teaching simple past tense.
