Fairy tale is a literary work of narrative text. It is one of the learning materials in senior high school. As a learning material, fairy tale is taught to students. Fairy tale is believed to give a significant function to develop either cognitive or affective aspects. To get students understand more about fairy tale, macrostructure and microstructure of the text needed to be taught in finding the representation of meaning, reference, and the linguistic details of the text.
The research applied qualitative narrative discourse analysis and analyzed two fairy tale texts found in “Bahasa Inggris Tingkat Lanjut untuk Kelas XI” textbook. The two fairy tales titled “The Goose Girl” and “Puss in Boots” were chosen due to the structures in the text. The data were analyzed by document analysis. Datasheets were used to collect the data based on the theory of macrostructure and microstructure by Van Dijk (2021).
The results showed that there are 15 deletions, 1 generalization, and 9 constructions in “The Goose Girl” macrostructure analysis and 6 deletions and 14 constructions in “Puss in Boots” fairy tale. From those macrostructure, the microstructure analysis showed the results with the semantic aspects for both fairy tales were implicit, the syntactical aspect dominantly by the nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, the lexical aspect dominantly by the repetitions and collocations, and the rhetorical aspect by expressions.
As a result, the writer suggested some implications. First, this research would help teachers use fairy tale as a literary work in narrative text that contains meaning, reference and linguistic details that should be taught. Second, this research would motivate students in drawing conclusion from the fairy tales in different structures from what they learn before. Third, the results of this research would enhance the students‟ critical thinking by their reading skill in terms of language features and the functions.
