Reading is one of the four language skills which is vital to be mastered by students. It is a tool to get some information from the written text. Related to the reading activity, the students need to comprehend the meaning of the text. However, senior high school students in Indonesia, including those at MAN Kota Magelang, frequently encounter problems in reading comprehension due to factors such as insufficient motivation, limited vocabulary, and uninspiring teaching methods. Furthermore, teachers tend to have fewer teaching strategies to support the teaching-learning process. To address this issue, the writer carried out research on the students’ descriptive text reading comprehension by using the College Bowl strategy, which encourages student interest in learning and interaction and improves their reading comprehension.
There are two main objectives of this research. Firstly, to explain whether the use of the College Bowl strategy can increase the students’ learning motivation of the descriptive text reading comprehension. Secondly, to describe how the College Bowl strategy improves the students’ achievement of the descriptive text reading comprehension.
This research is a Classroom Action Research. The subject of this research is X 2 students of MAN Kota Magelang in the school year 2022/2023 which consist of 35 students. To collect the data, the writer used non-test (observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation) and tests. The research was carried out into Pre-Cycle, Cycle 1, and Cycle 2. The writer gave treatment to the students by using College Bowl strategy in Cycle 1 and Cycle 2.
Based on the result of the data analysis, there is a significant improvement of the student learning motivation in the teaching-learning process. The students show the good improvement of learning participation in the class. The students were more active and interested in the teaching by using College Bowl strategy in the teaching-learning activity. There is also an improvement of the students’ descriptive reading comprehension. In the pre-cycle, the average score of the students’ descriptive text reading comprehension is 57.82. After being taught by using College Bowl strategy, the average score in cycle 1 is 71.14. The average score in cycle 2 is 81.48 and it fulfills the minimum score criteria. The writer suggests English teachers to use the College Bowl strategy as one of the strategies to improve the students’ descriptive text reading comprehension.
