Reading can be an essential skill for students to comprehend various literacy. However, students still have difficulties comprehending a text. Several factors influenced the problems, the most prominent problem is students have a lack of interest to read an English text and comprehend what they read because of the media used to teach reading. Therefore, the writer conducted a study to overcome the problem by using the English song lyric “Hero by Mariah Carey as a learning media.
There are two objectives of the study. The first is to know the significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using the song lyric “Hero” by Mariah Carey. The second is to know how effective the song lyric “Hero” by Mariah Carey in enhancing students’ reading comprehension.
The writer has applied quasi-experimental research. There were two groups: the experiment (XI Social 1) and the control (XI Social 2) and conducted in SMAN 1 Magelang. To collect the data, the writer used reading comprehension test for pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 22.
Based on the result and discussion, it is showed that there are some improvements in students’ reading comprehension after the treatment was given. The mean score of the pre-test from the control class was 75.16 and that of the experiment class was 82.26. In the post-test, the mean score from the control class was 80.48, and the experiment class was 93.29. It indicated that there was an effectiveness with song lyric “Hero” by Mariah Carey and the result showed that the experiment class scores from pre-test to post-test was increased by around 11%. According to the t-test conducted by SPSS, the (p) value was 0.00 and to was 7.121. It can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research is accepted.
