In this globalization era, communication skills play a crucial role. One must be proficient in communication skills to succeed in their particular field. In order for people to achieve their objectives, wants, and goals, they must master communication skills. Language is a tool for communication. With the use of a language, perfect communication is possible. It may communicate our thoughts and ideas through speaking. Speaking is a technique in which a speaker delivers information or messages to listeners while also expressing her ideas to others orally (Sri & Fitri, 2016).
This research aims to know the significant influence of using the charades game on the descriptive text speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP N 1 Magelang. This research used a quasi-experimental method. The data were collected by a test that involved 30 students as experimental class and 30 students as a control class that used a purposive sampling technique.
The writer analyzed the data using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, including the normality test, homogeneity test and hypothesis test. The results of descriptive text showed the mean score of pre-test experiment class was 56.67 and post-test of experiment class was 69.47 and the mean score of pre-test of the control class was 56.27 and post-test of control class was 65.20. Furthermore, the results showed that there is a significant influence of using charades games on
descriptive text speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP N 1 Magelang. It can be seen from the testing of the independent sample t-test where the Sig. (0.027) it is lower than α = 0.05 and it means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected.
The conclusion is, there is a significant influence of using charades games on the students' descriptive text speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP N 1 Magelang. Besides the data results, the students looked more confident to speak English clearly in front of the class. The writer proposes some suggestions for the teachers to consider the learning methods used in the class. The students must have confidence to speak English well and be motivated to follow the learning process. Furthermore other researchers can use this game with different skills or materials.
