SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING ELSA SPEAK TO ENHANCE SPEAKING SKILLS FOR THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF SMPN 3 MAGELANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2022/2023

Speaking is an English skill that requires special attention from the teacher and must be mastered by the students. In contrast, the students have difficulty enhancing their communication ability. The issues are students' poor pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary, fluency, and lack of confidence. Students know about technology, such as mobile phones, because technology has improved significantly in this era. Unfortunately, the students lack understanding of how to utilize technology as a MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning).
On this basis, the attempted to introduce the ELSA Speak application to the students, particularly the eighth graders of SMPN 3 Magelang. This study seeks to determine the efficacy of using ELSA Speak to enhance the speaking skills of eighth-grade students, specifically those at SMPN 3 Magelang.
This study employed a quantitative methodology in a quasi-experimental design with a pretest and posttest non-equivalent group. This study's population consists of eighth-grade students from SMPN 3 Magelang. The samples are from classes 8E and 8G, which contain 29 and 32 students, respectively.
In the independent sample t-test, the Sig. (2-tailed) the score was 0.001. In the paired sample t-test, the Sig. (2-tailed) the score was 0.000. The independent and paired sample t-tests were less than 0.05 based on the criteria. It indicates that the application of ELSA Speak produced a significant improvement. In addition, the experimental class achieved a higher posttest score (38.50) than the control class (33.79).
In addition, it can be concluded that the ELSA Speak application is an effective way for students, particularly eighth graders, to improve their speaking skills. The writer hopes that the students can be more motivated and focused while learning a language for the teachers to use ELSA Speak can be useful to help the learning process and for further research can be useful as a reference related to ELSA Speak application.
