SKRIPSI USING PQ4R STRATEGY TO IMPROVE READING SKILLS OF THE ELEVENTH GRADERS OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 2 MUNTILAN IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2020/2021

This study explains how PQ4R strategy improve the students’ reading skills especially in second graders of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Muntilan. Based on the background study, there are some problems faced by students. The students have low motivation to read English texts and have difficulties finding information in the text. Based on some factors, the writer is interested to carry out a research about improving reading skills by using PQ4R Strategy. This research aims to know whether students’ skills of reading text could be improved by using PQ4R strategy and how PQ4R strategy could improve students’ skills of reading text. The writer used Classroom Action Research (CAR) to solve students’ problems in comprehending reading text. This research was conducted to 19 students of second graders of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Muntilan. There are two kinds of data in this research, quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data can be got from the result of reading tests skills. The qualitative data is derived from the questionnaire and observation. This data is used to know the result of the implementation the Classroom Action Research to the class 11th students of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Muntilan. The result of this study showed that the students improved their motivation during online teaching learning process. The students were more active and some student’s initiative to ask and answer some questions. From test results, the improvement of students’ skills can be seen clearly in the improvement of their reading tests skills. The mean of pre cycle test score is 58.63. The minimal mastery level criterion in SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Muntilan is 65. There were only 31% of the whole students who could achieved criteria of minimum score. Then, the mean of cycle 1 test score is 68.73. There were 63% of students achieved criteria of minimum score. Next, the mean of cycle 2 test score is 77.57. The percentage of students achieved criteria of minimum score is 100%. The data of cycle 1 and cycle 2 can be concluded that students’ reading skills were improved by applying PQ4R strategy based on analysis in teaching learning process.
