SKRIPSI INTERPERSONAL MEANING USED BY ENGLISH TEACHER’S UTTERANCES IN READING CLASS AT SMPN 11 MAGELANG

Interpersonal meanings are always conducted in every classroom interaction. Therefore, students need the teacher's help to get through this. However, many students have difficulty and a low ability to understanding the content of the text related to the interpersonal meaning used in reading class. The students' responses also cannot be appropriate because teacher often represent mood in a different function to get the interpersonally meaning between the teacher and students. Related to the problems above, this research aims to know the types of moods used by English teachers, determine which dominant types of moods, and describe the function of interpersonal meaning served in English teachers' utterances. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The research subject was the teacher's utterances of the eighth graders of SMPN 11 Magelang in 2022/2023. The writer observed and collected the teacher's and students' interaction then transcripted to gather the data. And for the data analysis the researcher used a qualitative design. The finding of this study reveals that 174 utterances show the types of mood: 56 declarative, 87 interrogatives, and 31 imperatives. The dominant mood is the interrogative. For the interpersonal function, the writer found nine functions: interrogative expressed statement, command, and offer; imperative expressed statement, question, and offer; declarative expressed command, question, and offer. Furthermore, based on the result, the writer concluded that there are three types of mood types in teachers' utterances. Then, the type of mood frequently found was interrogative. The writer found several moods expressed more than one mood function for the function of interpersonal meaning. Hopefully, this research can be used as information and a reference for subsequent research.
