A test is an important part because it can find out the weaknesses and strengths of students' knowledge based on their test scores. Hence, the test used by the teacher must have good quality. A good test is a test that has an appropriate proportion of the difficulty level, that is not too easy and not too difficult. Thus, it is necessary to check the difficulty level of test items to know the quality. The difficulty level analysis will help the teacher to repair and revise the English test items so that the teacher or the test-maker can make better test items, and the teaching and learning outcomes will improve. A difficulty level analysis is rarely performed by the school or English teacher at MTsN 2 Kota Magelang. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the difficulty level of English summative test items in MTsN 2 Kota Magelang Academic Year 2021/2022. This study used a descriptive quantitative method that employed a content analysis technique. The data was analyzed by using ANATES software. The writer used the theory from Fitrianawati (2017) to determine the balanced portion of the difficulty level of test items. The summative test consists of 45 items that are divided into 40 multiplechoice items and 5 essay items. The result of this study showed that there were thirty-eight items with difficulty index range of 100,00 to 75,00 in the easy category (84,44%), four items with difficulty index range of 68,75 to 37,50 in the moderate category (8,89%), and three items with difficulty index range of 18,75 to 6,25 in the difficult category (6,67%).
