SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING REFERENTIAL LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS USED BY STUDENTS IN THE FOURTH SEMESTER OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT TIDAR UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023

This study was conducted to share referential language functions used by students in the fourth semester of English Department Tidar University. The writer analysed types of referential language functions used by students in the fourth semester of English Department Tidar University. The objectives of this study were to investigate types of referential language functions and find out the type of referential language functions most used by students in the fourth semester of English Department Tidar University.
This study was descriptive qualitative research. This study used theories of Nord (2006) about the types of Referential Language Functions. The procedure of data analysis to identify types of referential language functions, classify referential language functions, put the data on the table based on the types, and transcribe the data that focusing on types of referential language functions. The data is displayed in a table, in order to help the readers read easily. And the last step, the writer drew the conclusion based on the data about types of referential language functions and type of referential language functions most used by students in the fourth semester of English Department Tidar University.
There were two results in this study. First, there were 6 types of referential language functions based on Nord (2006) which performed by students in the fourth semester of English Department Tidar University. They are identifying, describing, defining, explaining, contrasting/comparing, and discussing referential language functions. There are 89 data of referential language functions found. Identifying is the most refrential language function used by students with 33 data the percentage is 45,6%, followed by discussing with 30 the percentage is 33,7%, followed by defining with 15 data the percentage is 16,9%, followed by explaining with 7 data the percentage is 7,9%, followed by describing with 3 data the percentage is 3,4% and comparing/contrasting as the last position with 1 data the percentage is 1,1%. According to the results above, the writer expected that English language learners who are studying sociolinguistics about language functions can understand in detail the types of referential language functions. The teacher can use examples of referential language functions in learning process because it can help the learners how to interpret referential language functions meaning. The English language learners can use the types of referential language functions in a certain environment to improve their critical thinking and enrich their vocabulary of target language.
