In English learning, reading comprehension is an essential component of reading skills (Kanmaz, 2022). Students need to master it in order to study English well. Nevertheless, based on the writer's observations to the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Grabag, it was found that the students’ reading comprehension was low. It is indicated by the students’ mean score which is only 55. Proper techniques need to be used to increase the students' learning motivation and reading comprehension. Based on the problem above, this study is intended to find out whether the use of ECOLA Technique can increase the learning motivation of the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Grabag and to find out the increase of recount text reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Grabag who are taught by using ECOLA Technique. The writer conducted a classroom action research (CAR). It was divided into Pre-cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The subjects of the study were 36 students of the X1 class of SMAN 1 Grabag. The writer collected the data using observation sheet, questionnaire, documentation, and tests. This result shows that the students were more motivated after the teacher implemented ECOLA technique in learning recount text reading comprehension. The writer compared the result of observation, questionnaire, and documentation in pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II. It indicates that more than a half of the students participated in the teaching-learning process. Also, the students can confidently answer the teacher's questions, comment, and ask questions about the materials. Then, the pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II test results increase. The students’ average score in the pre-cycle is 51.11. Then, the students’ average score in cycle I is 68.75, and in cycle II is 82.64. Based on the results of the research, using the ECOLA technique can increase the recount text reading comprehension of the tenth graders in SMAN 1 Grabag. Therefore, the writer suggests that it is better for the students to be more motivated during the teaching-learning process and increase their recount text reading comprehension. Meanwhile, the teacher is expected to increase the teaching technique for reading comprehension using appropriate techniques that have a positive impact. It would be better if the teacher implemented ECOLA technique in teaching-learning. For other researchers, the writer suggests them to enhance and explore this study to make it better.
