Communicative competence is one of the competencies that should be mastered by English language learners. Communicative competence is directly related to communication success so that someone who learns a language must have the competence to speak that language. In this case, it is necessary to pay attention to the speaking skills of the learner so that the learner can achieve sufficient communicative competence to be able to communicate actively in English.
As it is known, speaking is one of the skills that is considered difficult, especially when practiced in everyday life. There are various factors that affect the activeness of students in speaking in class using English. These factors are sometimes not understood by students so that there are many errors and mistakes made by students. These factors can help students to be able to master every conversation or discussion that is carried out in class.
After knowing and mastering the factors related to students' speaking activeness, it is important for students to know the right strategies for learning speaking. In addition, by knowing the appropriate learning strategies students can learn effectively and efficiently according to the methods students are interested in. Therefore, by using the descriptive qualitative method, this study aims to investigate what factors can influence students' active speaking English and what strategies students can use in the learning process especially in speaking practice.
The results of the questionnaires and interviews given to the students revealed that the main factor that has the greatest influence on students' active speaking is the linguistic factor which consists of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. As for the strategy that students usually use is a social strategy where students feel that interaction with friends or someone who has mastered English speaking really helps them in learning speaking during the learning process.
