This study was conducted to share flouting maxims of Ford v Ferrari movie. The writer analysed kinds of flouting maxims on Ford v Ferrari movie. The objectives of this study were to describe flouting maxims types and find out the dominant kind of flouting maxims on Ford v Ferrari movie, and to describe the implication of this study to ELT.
This study was descriptive qualitative research. This study used theories of (Grice, 1975) about the types of flouting maxims and (Leech, 2016) about the functions of flouting maxims. The procedure of data analysis to identify types and functions of flouting maxims, classify flouting maxims, put the data on the table based on the types and functions of flouting maxims, and transcribe the data that focusing on types and functions of flouting maxims.
There were results on this study. First, there were 4 types of flouting maxims which appeared on Ford v Ferrari movie. They are flouting maxim of : quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. The dominant types of flouting maxims is flouting maxim of relevance, the percentage is 60%. Second, there were 4 founctions of flouting maxims. They are : competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive function. The dominant functions of flouting maxims is collaborative function, the percentage is 46%.
According to the results above, the writer expected that English language learners who are studying pragmatics about flouting maxims can understand in detail the types and functions of flouting maxims. The lecurer can use example of flouting maxims in learning process because it can help the learners more understand about flouting maxims. The English language learners can use the flouting maxims in a certain environment to improve their speaking-listening skills.
