Modal verbs are identified as a challenging grammatical aspect in English language learning, and their accurate understanding and usage are crucial for effective communication. This study aims to identify the kinds and the dominant modal verbs in the conversation section of the English textbook for Junior High School and assess their alignment with the real-world language usage. The research highlights the significance of incorporating authentic language examples and corpus-based analysis in the development of teaching materials. In this study, the writer conducted qualitative research by using content analysis. The subject of this research was an English "FLASH" textbook for the ninth graders of Junior High School at SMP N 1 Kota Mungkid. Documentation is the method utilized for collecting the data. The data were then analyzed using Palmer's (1990) and Quirk et al. (1985) theories.
This study showed that there were modal verbs like can, may, must, will, might, should, would, and need to in the conversation section of the textbook. The kinds of modal verbs found are fifteen epistemic modals (33%), thirteen deontic modals (22%), and twenty-five dynamic modals (45%) with the highest range of will as volition (F = 17). Some modal verbs included in corpus-based research of a curriculum-based EFL textbook in Indonesia and included under the term authenticity are not present in the textbook's whole conversation section. Whereas junior high school students must learn how to utilize these modal verbs correctly to strengthen their English language skills and communicate more effectively. Textbook writers should evaluate how to portray modal verbs in the textbook conversation sections. Paying attention to the language used in dialogues, particularly the modal verbs, is vital. The writer suggests students become more sufficient in linguistic knowledge, especially in modal verbs to be communicatively competent. While for future researchers, it will be better to consider using a larger sample size, broadening the scope of the study, and using multiple methods or resources of data to triangulate the findings.
