The ninth graders of junior high school should understand learning advertisements well. Unfortunately, they find difficulties, such as misunderstanding in determining advertisements' generic structure, social function, and figurative language. Then, they do know language features and persuasion techniques. They are confusing about finding a trusted platform for their learning process. To support it, the students and the teachers need references and media platforms related to advertisements. Therefore, the writer studied analyzing language features and persuasion techniques used in Hindustan Times’ advertisements for junior high schools.
This study is done with two objectives. The first is to find the language features and persuasion techniques used in Hindustan Times’ advertisements for junior high school. The second is to find the most dominant types of language features and persuasion techniques used in Hindustan Times’ advertisements for junior high school.
In conducting the study, the writer uses the descriptive qualitative method. This study's subject is seven advertisements taken from Hindustan Times’ advertisements published in May 2023. The data were analyzed by using the theory of Grey (2008) and Kleppner (1986) in Verdonk (2002). The steps of analysis data are used from Creswell (2014).
This study shows seven lexical features, nine syntactical features, and all the persuasion techniques used in the seven Hindustan Times advertisements' data. The most dominant type of lexical features are Hyperbole and Simple Vocabulary with 24% or 6 of 28 data; the most dominant of syntactical features are Long Noun Phrase, Present Tense, and Incomplete Sentences with 20% in 6 of 30 data; and the most dominant persuasion technique is Competitive Stages with 57% in 4 of 7 data. The pedagogical implication in education is that teachers can be taught various language features and persuasion techniques and choose acceptable and more persuasive advertisements with Hindustan Times e-paper.
