This study examines discourse markers (DMs) in English communication, particularly in the animated film "Zootopia," and their relevance to the Written and Spoken English Grammar (WSEG) course. DMs play a vital role in conveying meaning beyond literal interpretations and enhancing communication. The research aims to provide valuable teaching-learning materials for English educators and contribute to the understanding of DMs in the communication paradigm. Based on things described above, this study is aimed to examine the mostused DMs in the Zootopia film. It is followed by investigating how the DMs in this film function. Ultimately, the implications of Zootopia’s DMs in the WSEG course are drawn. The study employed a qualitative discourse analysis, using a qualitative descriptive design. The research subject was the English animated film "Zootopia," with primary data extracted from spoken discourse and utterances of the characters. The research instrument was adapted from Fung and Carter's DM multi-categorical framework. Data were collected through documentation by watching the film with its original English subtitle and extracting the text. The analysis involved grouping data into categories and identifying core functional paradigms of DMs. To ensure trustworthiness, dependability was employed, and investigator triangulation involved a WSEG course lecturer validating the data. These methods contribute to the study's reliability and thoroughness. The research findings revealed that the most-used DM types in the film "Zootopia" were and, oh, and just. These DMs served various functions, including showing responses, marking shared knowledge, managing conversations, and others. The implications for the WSEG course suggested that the film's diverse DMs could be valuable teaching materials, enhancing students' spoken English communication skills and pragmatics. Using authentic materials like films might improve language education and students' understanding of DM usage. The study concludes that the film "Zootopia" features various DMs, with and, oh, and just being the most used. These DMs serve different functions, reflecting native English usage. The implications include contributions to discourse analysis, benefits for students' communication, and pedagogical advantages for educators. The study suggests further research on unapplied DM types and emphasizes incorporating DM instructions in language courses like WSEG to enhance conversational skills in English.
