This study was conducted to show implicature fromteachers’ talk in teaching English. The objectives of the study were to to know the types and the meaning of implicature used in teacher's talk in Indonesian Context in MTs Nurul Huda Ngablak in Academic Year 2022/2023.
The type of the study is descriptive qualitative. The data collecting procedures are video recording, transcribing and calculating. Selecting the dialogues and then categorizing the data based on implicature utterance in the dialogues. Analysis in this research was four stages they are: data reduction, coding, data display, and drawing conclusion or interpretation.
The writer found three types of implicature in teachers' talk in the Indonesian context at MTs Nurul Huda Ngablak during the academic year 2022/2023: conversational implicature, scalar implicature, and conventional implicature. Among these types, conversational implicature was the most frequent, accounting for 50% of the total implicatures observed. Scalar implicature followed with 40% occurrence, while conventional implicature had the fewest instances at 10%. The meaning of implicature was discussed in relation to their respective types. Scalar implicature involves the negation of stronger terms in scalar expressions. Conversational implicature relied on indirect communication and context. Conventional implicature pertains to additional meaning conveyed by specific linguistic expressions beyond their literal interpretation, relying on conventionalized associations. The violation of maxims was found in the implicature. The types of maxim were found in the English teacher’s utterances in teaching English. English teacher’s utterances which contain the conversational implicature appears mostly in quality maxim.
