SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SELF-TALK STRATEGY IN IMPROVING EFL STUDENTS’ SPEAKING

EFL students find difficulties or challenges related to the learning process especially in improving speaking skill such as students find difficulties in understanding the vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. The writer will focus on seventh graders students of junior high school related to the implementation of Self-Talk strategy in improving students speaking skills. The design of this study is quasi-experimental design by applying pre-test and post-test into the experimental and control group of the students. The experimental group taught English speaking using Self-Talk method and the control group using conventional method. Then the result of the paired sample t-test between experimental and control shows that t-test score is higher than the t-table (6.896 > 2.048) with the degree of freedom (df) being 28. It means that there is any significant difference between the experimental and control group after being given treatment. On the other hand, the experimental group has improvement between pre-test and post-test average score. Although the control group also has improvement, but not as much as the experimental group. It can be concluded that the Self-Talk strategy is an effective method to improve the EFL students especially in speaking skills. The Self-Talk strategy also made students can help them to come closer to themselves and to learn to trust their actions.
