SKRIPSI CATAPHORIC FUNCTION ANALYSIS ON PERSONAL REFERENCE IN ESSAY WRITING BY THE FOURTH SEMESTER OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Students must develop their writing skills to make the text being coherent. They also have to consider that their text is meaningful, and the sentences are connected to each other. The writer found that the students still get some difficulties to make essay writing texts, especially in composing a coherent text. The problems are caused by their less knowledge about reference, which acts as a cohesive device. It shows that the students had limited knowledge about connecting the sentence to be coherent and meaningful.
The reseacher is interested to analyze cataphoric function on personal reference in essay writing text by the fourth semester students English Department in Universitas Tidar as the data research. There are two objectives in this research. The first objective is to find out the types of cataphoric function on personal refence and the second one is to find out the dominant type of cataphoric function on personal reference used in essay writing texts by the fourth semester students English Department in Universitas Tidar 2022/2023.
The type of research was descriptive qualitative research. The technique of data collection was the documentation technique. The data were taken from recount texts written by the essay writing texts by the fourth semester students English Department in Universitas Tidar 2022/2023. The reseacher got 30 essay writing texts to be analyzed based on the theory of Halliday & Hasan (1976)
The result shows that there are 363 cataphoric reference, they consist of Speaker (3.95%), Addresses (5.34%), Speaker and 3rd Person (16.51%), 3rd person male (2.55%), 3rd person female (0.93%), Other person (49.53%), Objects (16.97%), Generalized person (4.14%), Pedagogical implication of this research is essential to be English material to teach. Cataphoric reference as a part of cohesive device, it connects each sentence to be coherent text. The coherent of sentence builds a good sequence of events. A good sequence of events makes the recount text becomes more informative and meaningful.
