Teachers and students are involved in a communication process in English teaching and learning class. The running of communication must run effectively. However, a communication breakdown may occur. The possibility of a breakdown in communication increases when the class is conducted through online media. The objectives of this research are: (1) to find out the types of communication breakdown in online English teaching and learning class; (2) to find out the repair strategies used to overcome communication breakdown in online English teaching and learning class.
The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. The subject of this research is the lecturer and the students of a speaking class at the English Department of Tidar University. The data was collected by recording and transcribing the communication process of an online English-speaking course. A qualitative approach is used to analyze the data. The communicative competence theory of Celce-Murcia (2007) determines the type of communication breakdown. Then, Emanuel Abraham Schegloff's Theory of Repair strategies is used to analyze the speakers' communication repair/repair strategies.
This research's first result shows 30 communication breakdowns in online English-speaking classes caused by a lack of communicative competence. A lack of linguistic and discourse competence causes the highest frequency of communication breakdown. There is also one case where a technical problem caused a communication breakdown during the online class. The second result of this study is about communication repair/repair strategy to overcome communication breakdown. There are six types of self-repair strategies. Most of the speakers used hesitation pause, and repetition strategies. Besides that, there are three types of other-repair strategies. Judging ideas from the speaker's utterance is the most frequently used by the speakers.
The writer hopes that the teachers and the students can use this finding as a reference or illustration of communication breakdowns that might happen in English online classes and how to repair them.
