This undergraduate thesis employed a content analysis research methodology to assess the quality of speaking materials within the English textbook "Bright An English" for 7th grade Junior High School. Content analysis, as defined by Bryman (2011), involves studying communication artifacts and documents, such as pictures, audio, video, or formats. In this research, the method was chosen because it enabled the author to analyze the quality of speaking materials in English textbooks for 7th grade Junior High School, specifically within the context of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum. The research relied on documentation as a means of data collection.
The findings and discussions of this study shed light on the quality of speaking materials within the "Bright An English" textbook for 7th grade Junior High School. Through the utilization of content analysis, it was revealed that six activities did not meet the criteria for good speaking, while four activities met all the necessary requirements. The overall percentage of quality content in the speaking materials was determined to be 65%, categorizing them as "Fair" based on the guidelines established by Pusat Perbukuan.
These insights, derived from a content analysis approach, provide valuable guidance for curriculum developers, teachers, and educators seeking to enhance English language teaching for 7th-grade students. By considering the strengths and weaknesses identified in the speaking materials, stakeholders can collaborate to improve and create more engaging and effective learning experiences within the framework of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum
