Universitas Tidar has a vision and mission related to producing graduates who can be entrepreneurs based on resources and local wisdom. As one of the study programs at Universitas Tidar, the English Education Department graduates are expected to be entrepreneurs because they are not only able to teach but also build a business in education, and establishing an English private course is one of the options. However, there are many things could be improved in establishing it, one of which is speaking. Therefore, the writer decided to analyze the private course students’ difficulties in speaking English and find the problem-solving so that this study could be a guide when establishing the English Private Course.
This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The writer used a questionnaire, interview, observation, and documentation to collect the data by conducting the study in English Mastery at Titian Foundation Bayat. The writer analyzed the data using the theory of Bygate (2008) to find the students’ difficulties in speaking English. Then, the procedure of analyzing data was adopted by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014), which has three steps: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing.
Based on the analysis, this paper revealed that the student’s difficulties in the private course were categorized into linguistic obstacles (40.98%), speech processing difficulties (60.78%), academic and conversational English skills (53.84%), negative effect (38.48%), and access to speaking opportunities (39.27%). Therefore, the most dominant factor is speech processing difficulties. All of the other data collections also showed that private course students face difficulties in speaking English related to those five factors stated by Bygate (2008). Furthermore, to solve the students’ difficulties in speaking English, the writer suggested solutions by Ur (1996), the inventory of speaking strategies by Nakatami (2006), and the seven rules by A.J Hoge.
