Interpreting is a translating activity orally when one person speaks in the source language, and the interpreter converts it into the target language. Interpreting is divided into two types, and the first one is simultaneous interpreting and consecutive interpreting. Consecutive interpreting happens when the interpreter converts the source language into the target language after the speaker has finished his/her sentence or statement. The interpreter always found challenges and problems in interpreting even more students. In this case, the interpreter must find the solution to every problem and challenge. The interpreter usually uses strategy as a way to make their interpreting performance better. There are many strategies that interpreters can use in their interpreting performances.
The purposes of this research were (1) To find out the students' strategies when interpreting in consecutive interpreting from Indonesian into English and (2) To find out the challenges faced by the students when conducting consecutive interpreting from Indonesian into English.
This research was qualitative with case study methods. Data collection in this study used documentation and interviews. The participants were the seven of third-semester English Education Department students at Universitas Tidar in the Academic Year 2021/2022.
The findings showed that the two most dominant strategies used by the students were compression and addition. There were five of the third-semester English Education Department students used the compression strategy, and five students used the addition strategy. To apply those strategies, the interpreter must understand the speaker's message. It means that most students could comprehend the message from the speaker of the source language. Then, the students faced challenges in linguistic competence and unfamiliarity with accents, which might increase awareness of different cultures, and managed a limited amount of time to comprehend, convert, and convey the message. Also, the interlocutor's speaking speed and unfamiliarity with a new word. Eventually, the interpreter students must know the meaning conveyed by the speaker of the source language to deal with the interpreting challenges. The results of this research contribute to the students, the lecturers in their learning activity in consecutive interpreting, or someone learning about consecutive interpreting to use strategies in interpreting shown in this study.
