English proficiency is important for effective global communication. However, students in Indonesia, like those in MAN 1 Kabupaten Magelang, often struggle with expressing their thoughts due to a lack of vocabulary mastery, pronunciation difficulties, and grammar knowledge. Furthermore, teachers tend to be confused to choose words to give to the students so the class feels like passive. To address this issue, the writer observed the teacher utterance and tried to find the gaps that make teacher confused to choose the words. The aim of the study is observing the assertive illocutionary acts that are used by teachers in the tenth-grade of MAN 1 Kabupaten Magelang. The research used the theory of Hornby(1995) that divided assertive illocutionary act into six kinds: asserting, reporting, explaining, showing something, suggesting, and refusing.
The type of the study is descriptive qualitative. The writer used the Hornby’s theory as the guidance to observe the teacher utterances. Based on the Hornby’s theory, the writer categorized the assertive illocutionary that are used by teacher. The writer found 5 types of assertive illocutionary acts. There are 11 items for asserting, 3 items for reporting, 5 items for explaining, 1 item for showing something, and 4 items for suggesting. The writer did not find the assertive illocutionary act for refusing in the data because the teacher knows the capability of their students so they will not refuse the students' answer but correct it by adding some explanation to make students answer better. It can motivate students to learn more. The writer suggests that the teacher apply suitable type of assertive illocutionary act during the teaching learning process. It functions to motivate students to practice their speaking skill and understand what the teacher says so, the subject can be well understood.
