SKRIPSI UTILIZING ENGLISH SUBTITLES IN YOUTUBE VIDEOS AS AUDIO-VISUAL MEDIA FOR IMPROVING VOCABULARY MASTERY: A STUDY ON EIGHTH-GRADE OF SMPN 2 SECANG

Learning English requires vocabulary mastery. To help students understand the material more efficiently, vocabulary is a language component that should be improved in learning English. Unfortunately, students still have difficulty in understanding the material, and they lack of vocabulary mastery. Moreover, the lack of teaching media or technology to support teaching-learning activities makes them unmotivated and less interested.
This study examines the use of audio-visual media to make learning activities more entertaining, joyful, and effective, particularly in eight-grade of SMPN 2 Secang. This study aims to know the significant improvement in the students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using English subtitles in YouTube videos as audio-visual media. This study also aims to know the students’ engagement by utilizing this teaching media.
The explanatory mixed-methods was used in this study using quasi-experimental research followed up with qualitative research. The observation was used to know the student’s engagement during the utilization of the teaching media. The subject of this study was the students of 8A (33 students) as the experimental class and students of 8C (32 students) as the control class.
The independent t-test result shows the t-test value is 2.070 while the t-table is 1.998. It can be found that the t-test is higher than the t-table, so that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. Then by calculating the n-gain score, the writer concludes that utilizing English subtitles in YouTube videos as audio-visual media is more effective than utilizing video without English subtitles. Furthermore, the engagement (behavioral, cognitive, and emotional) resulted from the observations shows good results which only 3 from 14 points get enough marks.
Since it is proven that English subtitles in YouTube videos as audio-visual media can improve students’ abilities in vocabulary mastery, it can be concluded that utilizing English subtitles in YouTube videos can be applied as media in teaching vocabulary mastery. Then, the writer wants to suggest the future researchers to employ a similar study with English subtitles, but they can change the language skills/language components and material.
