Pronunciation is one of the basic skills in English that requires the students to master it to achieve a good communication. However, pronunciation assessments in high school are not specific considering the importance of correct pronunciation. The increasingly short provision of English language lessons in high school means that teachers and students have limitations in learning and assessing pronunciation skills. Automatic caption is a transcript of human spoken language generated by a speech recognition algorithm and displayed as a written text. In Google Meet, there is an automatic caption feature that can help teachers in assessing pronunciation. This study aimed (1) to figure out the most errors made by students in the pronunciation using Google Meet automatic caption; (2) to find out the students' awareness and opinion after using Google Meet automatic caption. The study used descriptive qualitative method. This study used three instruments: students‟ reading transcripts, questionnaires, and interview. In analyzing WER and questionnaires, the writer used numerical analysis, while qualitative analysis is used in interpreting the results of interviews. The subjects of this study were students of SMA N 1 Candiroto. This study used a purposive sampling technique. The sample for this study consisted of 35 students from class XI 4, totaling 285 students who made up the population.
The findings showed that the pronunciation errors that students often made are insertions, followed by deletion, and lastly is substitution. The factors including students' feelings, voice volume, noise, and internet connection, influenced their pronunciation performance. Based on the results of questionnaires and interviews, students gave positive answers regarding the use of Google Meet automatic captions as a pronunciation assessment tool. They also claimed that awareness of the importance of their pronunciation increased after the use of Google Meet auto- captioning. From the finding, the writer concluded that the pronunciation error that students at SMA N 1 Candiroto often make is insertion. After using Google Meet automatic captions, students‟ awareness of pronunciation increases and it has a profound impact on students as a pronunciation assessment tool.
