Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. Universitas Tidar. First Advisor Atsani Wulansari S.S., M.Hum, Second Advisor Susanti Malasari S.Pd., M.Hum.
Google Translate is a free accessible translation machine released in 2006 by Google. It has emerged as one of the foremost well-known translation machine tools utilized by students to learn languages. Google Translate still has several shortcomings despite its many advantages. Students still use it to assist their writing even though they are aware of its problems. Therefore, the researcher conducts research regarding the use of Google Translate.
This research was focused on the benefits, the problems and how to deal with the problems of using Google Translate in writing classes during the post-pandemic. It applies the case study method with a qualitative research approach. The instruments used in this research were questionnaires to collect the data, interview to strengthen the data, and documentation to get the supporting data. The subject of this research was 30 students from the writing classes of fourth-semester students of the English Education Department at Universitas Tidar in the 2022/2023 academic year.
This study shows that the students find more benefits than the problems of Google Translate. The students used it to translate in writing classes. They found that Google Translate is faster than other translation machines. Besides, it could help them enrich their vocabulary and improves their writing skill. However, they also found problems in using Google Translate. One of the problems is the lack of translation accuracy. To overcome this problem, some students asked their friends’ help or used other applications. The students gave their positive responses toward Google Translate. It has positive impacts on the students because of its benefits. There were also some suggestions for the students and future researchers. The students are suggested to recheck and revise the translation results. Besides, future researchers are hoped to conduct a research on the same theme to provide additional existing findings or new findings.
