SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING GRAMMATICAL CONSTRUCTION OF CLAUSES IN STUDENTS’ ESSAY WRITING SUBJECT AT THE FIFTH SEMESTER OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Higher education students need good essay writing ability at the university level in order to pass the subjects, create a scientific work, and advanced grammar comprehension. Hence, in writing an essay, good grammar mastery becomes high demand, especially in terms of clause understanding. Over the mastery of the grammatical construction of clauses, students are able to construct a sentence more creatively as well as the fundamental of essay writing.
The aim of this study was to investigate the types, frequency, and implications based on three main clauses in English namely the adverbial clauses, the adjective clauses, and the noun clauses in students’ essay writing. These purposes have been made regarding the high demand for the existence of grammatical construction of clauses in essay writing.
The approach used in this study was in the form of a qualitative approach and accompanied by applying the text-based methodology of content analysis which came from the essay writing product. This study involved 20 higher education students from the fifth semester at the English department of Tidar University as the main subject where the material about clauses and essays were at the same time which made the focus of this study became more relevant.
The findings of this study stated that the researcher succeeded in finding three clauses: adverbial clauses, adjective clauses, and noun clauses with different numbers of appearances for each type which accumulated from each investigated essay. Adverbial clauses were the most dominant type with 99 items, 20 items for adjective clauses, and 9 items for noun clauses. In addition, the implications of the grammatical constructions of clauses in essay writing yielded positive results where most of the subjects agreed that grammatical constructions of clauses played a major role in essay writing such as contributing to connecting ideas in making sentences and improving the quality of essay writing results.
The conclusion of this study stated that the grammatical constructions of clauses have become a very important element in creating an essay for more interesting sentence structure, more creativity, meaningful, and create coherence in a paragraph. Besides, the majority of participants agree that the grammatical constructions of clauses could not be separated from essay writing subjects because only through the comprehension of grammatical constructions of clauses, they are able to yield good essay writing outcomes.
