The low ability of students to produce good descriptive text was the starting point for this research. This happened due to various factors. One of the factors was the inappropriate use of learning methods. In this research, Problem-Based Learning is the solution to this problem. Problem-Based Learning is a method that uses "real problems" as the starting point for learning. The problems presented must be authentic, real, and clear or easy to understand. Students must participate actively in solving the problems presented to find the required solutions. PBL is applied in small groups where students discuss with their group members to find the "knowledge" needed to solve problems. Therefore, the use of groups in the PBL method is crucial. The writer is interested in researching the effectiveness of the Problem- Based Learning method to improve students' ability to write a descriptive text. The subject of this study was a seventh grader at SMP Negeri 3 Magelang in the academic year 2023/2024. The writer used quantitative research as a research approach. The applied research design of the study was a Quasi-Experimental study. Purposive sampling was the sampling technique with 252 students as the population and 62 students as the sample. In collecting the data, the writer employed pre-test and post-test. The writer used the SPSS 25 version to analyze the data. Based on the independent sample t-test results, namely the Sig. (2-tailed) obtained is 0.000, meaning the PBL effectively improves students' ability to write descriptive text. The increase that occurred was also significant, as evidenced by the Sig results. (2-tailed) paired sample t-test, namely 0.000 and an increase of 27.00 points in the experimental class, while in the control class, it only increased by 17.28 points. From the research conducted by the writer, it can be concluded that PBL has proven effective in significantly improving students' ability to write descriptive text. The writer recommends adopting the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method, particularly for teaching descriptive writing, as it fosters student engagement and interest by involving students in real-life issues. It encourages creativity and innovation, emphasizing the use of PBL as a teaching innovation. Additionally, the writer invites future researchers to explore research on teaching methods, precisely the PBL approach, to expand available references in the field.
