SKRIPSI THE USE OF TEAM GAME TOURNAMENT IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION OF EIGHTH GRADERS AT SMPN 10 MAGELANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR OF 2023/2024

English has become an essential subject that students should master. Reading is one of the language skills in learning English that helps students comprehend the material being studied. The average reading score of eighth graders of SMPN 10 Magelang is 65, while the minimum learning mastery standard for English in this school is 70. There are two objectives in this research, the first is to know whether the implementation of the Team Game Tournament can increase the learning motivation of narrative text reading comprehension. The second is to know how great the increase of the narrative text reading after being taught by the Team Game Tournament. The subject of this research is VIII F of SMPN 10 Magelang in the school year of 2023/2024. This research used classroom action research as the type of research. The writer carried out this study using pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II. In pre-cycle, the writer observed the teaching and learning process and gave precycle tests to the students. In cycle I and II, the writer treated students use the Team Game Tournament. Test and non-test (observation, questionnaire, and documentation) were used by the writer to collect the data. According to the data analysis result, there is a significant increase in students’ motivation in the class. The students who answer the teachers’ questions in the pre-cycle are 29%, in cycle I are 61% students, and there are 71% students in cycle II. There is also an increase in students’ narrative text reading comprehension. The mean score of students’ narrative text reading comprehension in pre-cycle is 50.32. Then, the mean score after being taught using Team Game Tournament in cycle I is 69.68. The mean score in cycle II is 80.13, which fulfills the minimum learning mastery standard score. Additionally, the writer recommends that English teachers use the Team Game Tournament technique to teach reading.
