Thornbury (2002) stated that vocabulary is essential to language learning because language is based on words. Vocabulary is necessary to learn because learning a language without vocabulary feels like nothing. Without mastering the vocabulary, the students will not be able to master the language. Based on the observations at SMPN 2 Secang, when the teacher and the students discussed their midterm assessment questions (PTS), some of the students still needed help to find the meaning of words and apply them to the questions their teacher gave. Some of the students chose the wrong answer because some of them did not know the meaning of some English words and sentences. Because of this, the writer believes that using the mind map strategy can help improve the students' English vocabulary. Buzan (2008) stated that mind map is a recording technique that is creative, effective and maps thoughts very simply.
This study's population consisted of the 9th grade students of SMPN 2 Secang, with a total sample size of 62 students. The sample was collected using the technique of purposive random sampling, with selection based on the average class. The Mann-Whitney test found that the significant value in this study was 000
