SKRIPSI INVESTIGATING ENGLISH READING SKILLS OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA PGRI TEMANGGUNG

The tenth-grade students were required to master reading skills while learning English. Reading skills are very crucial to be mastered since it is a fundamental skill that could assist the students in acquiring other skills. As a foreign language, learning English, particularly reading an English text, is challenging for the students. Knowing to what extent students' English reading skills are lacking and the difficulties that may occur is essential. It can help to improve the student's and teachers' awareness about how to minimize the difficulties that the students may experience. Therefore, a good learning outcome can be achieved.
The purposes of this study are (1) To know the English reading skills of the tenth-grade students of SMA PGRI Temanggung. (2) To know the difficulties faced by the tenth-grade students of SMA PGRI Temanggung in English reading skills.
The design of this study is a descriptive quantitative study. The writer used a reading test to collect the data. The reading test is constructed based on the Learning Achievement of the reading element in the Merdeka Curriculum that refers to several macro reading skills stated by Brown (2004). The writer took 53 tenth-grade students of SMA PGRI Temanggung as the population of this study. The sample of this study was determined using the total sampling technique. In other words, the writer took the entire population as the sample of this study.
The first results showed that the mean score of the reading test was 54.38. Generally, the students' English reading skills were categorized at the "Poor" level. In addition, the study also showed that the students faced difficulties in all of the reading skills indicators. Infer context that is not explicit is the indicator with the most contributed difficulties at 14.6%. Vocabulary is the second indicator that contributed to difficulties at 14.07%. Reference is the third contributed difficulties at 13.5%. Implied information is the fourth contributed difficulties at 13.3%. Infer links and connections between events is the fifth contributed difficulties at 12.6%. Deduce causes and effects is the sixth contributed difficulties at 9.7%. Rhetorical Form (generic structure) is the seventh contributed difficulties at 7.36%. Main idea is the eighth contributed difficulties at 6.82%. Author's purposes/communicative function of the text is the ninth contributed difficulties at 5.0%. Explicit information is the last indicator that has the slightest difficulties, at 2.6%.
