The pandemic forced students to study from home, leading to a lack of direct interaction with teachers. When students returned to school, teachers had to start guiding them from scratch. Different teaching strategies were used, including discussion and lecturing to engage students, and self-monitoring to help students assess their progress and make plans to overcome challenges. These strategies have their own benefits and differ in terms of focus, goals, and methods.
After the pandemic, students at SMPN 4 Magelang faced difficulties in English speaking skill due to a lack of opportunities for practice and companionship when students had to do online learning, which led them to feel nervous, not confident, afraid, and even stutter when they have to read and spoke in English. Therefore, the writer was interested in using a self-monitoring strategy to know the impact on students' narrative text-speaking skill.
A quasi-experimental design was used in the study. The writer employed a Nonequivalent (Pretest and Post-test) Design with a purposive sampling technique. Both groups were given pretests and post-tests; the experimental group was the only one to receive the treatment, while the control group was instructed using conventional techniques, including lectures and discussions. Then, the data was observed using an independent T-Test using the SPSS 22 version.
The study found no significant difference in the impact of the self-monitoring strategy on eighth-grade students' narrative text-speaking skill at SMPN 4 Magelang. However, the average score increased by 20%, from 61.75 in pretest to 82.21 in post-test, indicating an impact on students’ scores. Moreover, a self-monitoring strategy has a positive impact, such as making students more confident and less nervous about speaking in English, reducing fear of judgment, and making mistakes. Thus, the use of self-monitoring strategies positively impacts students' narrative text speaking skill. The writer expected that other researchers interested in applying a self-monitoring technique to evaluating speaking skill across numerous academic fields would be able to build on and use this study.
