SKRIPSI THE USE OF BOARD GAME TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING A RECOUNT TEXT FOR NINTH GRADE OF SMP NEGERI 3 MAGELANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2023/2024

Writing is one of the English skills which is hard to learn by the students. Especially, in writing a recount text, the students find difficulties to transfer their ideas into written form and they still have lack of vocabulary. The use of proper media can increase the students’ writing ability and learning motivation. In addition, it helps the students to solve their difficulties in writing.
The objectives of this study were (1) to find out the use of Board Game towards the junior high school students’ ability to write a recount text in the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Magelang, and (2) to find out the use of Board Game towards the students’ learning motivation in the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Magelang. The writer conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was divided into Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The participants of this study consisted of 32 students, 8 males and 24 females, in IX F class of SMP Negeri 3 Magelang. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, documentation, and tests. To analyze the data, the writer divided into two based on the results namely test data and non-test data. The test data were analyzed within numeric analysis, but the non-test data were analyzed descriptively.
The results of this study showed that most of the students enhanced their ability to write a recount text. The average score in pre-cycle was 65.38, the average score in cycle I was 74.71, and the average score in cycle II was 82.38. There were only eight students of 32 students who did not pass the standard minimum score. It meant that the students had reached more than 75%. The writer compared the observation and questionnaire results in the pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II to find out the enhancement of students’ learning motivation. In the pre-cycle, the average of students’ learning motivation was 57.50, in the cycle I, it was 69.06, and the average of students’ learning motivation in cycle II was 80.63. It meant that the students had reached more than 75%. Then, it indicated that the students were motivated to write a recount text with a Board Game. Therefore, the use of Board Game could enhance students’ ability and their learning motivation in writing a recount text.
