Listening is one of the essential English language skills that students need to master. To understand what others are saying, students must comprehend every word and the topic being discussed. Unfortunately, students often struggle with listening due to their limited participation in the teaching and learning process. Therefore, teachers need to employ creative teaching techniques to enhance student engagement. One such technique is the dictogloss. In this study, writer implemented the dictogloss technique to improve students' listening comprehension of report text in high school education."
This study aimed to achieve two objectives. First, to determine whether the dictogloss technique effectively improves students' listening comprehension. The second objective is to assess the significance of the improvement in students' listening skills after the technique is implemented.
The writer conducted a study involving eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Mertoyudan, which had 31 students in a randomly chosen class. The writer used Pre-Experimental research design in this study that contains three stages: a pre-test, a teaching intervention, and a post-test. The writer used pre-test and post-test data collection to assess students' listening comprehension before and after learning dictogloss. The data analysis was performed using SPSS.
The results showed a significant improvement in students' engagement in the report text listening class after the writer implemented dictogloss as the teaching technique. The pre-test and post-test results were analyzed using SPSS, which revealed a Sig (2-tailed) score of 0.0. According to the rule for establishing a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test, if the Sig (2-tailed) score is below 0.05, as indicated by the SPSS calculation, it signifies a significant difference before and after the implementation of the dictogloss technique. In conclusion, this research about dictogloss is effective in enhancing students' listening comprehension in report text. The writer also suggests to use dictogloss technique in teaching listening especially in listening comprehension.
