SKRIPSI THE USE OF SPEEDY ENGLISH GRAMMAR APPLICATION TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ GRAMMAR MASTERY AT THE SEVENTH GRADE OF SMP N 12 MAGELANG

Speedy English Grammar application is a media for learning grammar because this application can help students to master grammar with fun especially in the seventh grade. Related to the case, this study implemented the Speedy English Grammar application to improve the students' grammar mastery in Junior School Education. Meanwhile, this study only focuses on the simple present tense as the novelty. The objectives are to find out the improvement of students' grammar mastery and motivation after Speedy English Grammar application was implemented in grammar class on simple present tense.
The writer conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of some stages: Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The study focused on VII-B students at SMP N 12 Magelang, chosen due to having the lowest average scores among classes. The data collection techniques that were used were tests and non-tests. The tests were administered in Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II containing 20 items (10 completion tests and 10 true or false). The non-test techniques included observations, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. Then, the data were analyzed by qualitative and quantitative techniques. The qualitative analysis followed Miles and Huberman's (1994) three-step process: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Meanwhile the quantitative analysis assessed average scores in each test by Arikunto's (2010). The writer also used methodological triangulation to get the data validity.
The result of this study showed that the implemented the Speedy English Grammar application can improve students' motivation for grammar mastery. The results of observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation proved it. The result of observation in Pre-Cycle was 53.45%, increasing to 81.03% in Cycle I and 91.03% in Cycle II. The implementation of the Speedy English Grammar application also made improvements in grammar mastery. In the Pre-Cycle test, the average grammar mastery score was 69.83. After the Speedy English Grammar application was applied, the average of student's score in Cycle I test reached 79.83, and it improved to 86.55 on the Cycle II test. Therefore, there was 16.72% points of the total improvement from the Pre-Cycle and Cycle II tests.
Based on the results above, the writer concludes that using the Speedy English Grammar application could improve the students' motivation and grammar mastery. Hence, it is recommended that English teachers apply the Speedy English Grammar application as an alternative media for teaching grammar.
