Writing skill is important in language learning to avoid misunderstandings. The students encountered some difficulties during writing class, including low vocabulary and incorrect grammar. These problems can be overcome by employing PowToon Animation Video as an interactive learning media to improve their writing skill.
The objectives of this study are to investigate the effectiveness of PowToon Animation Video in teaching writing to ninth graders at SMP N 6 Temanggung and determine whether the students who are using PowToon Animation Video have better writing skills than those who are using Picture media.
The study employed the quasi-experimental research design with the cluster random sampling technique. The population of this study was SMP N 6 Temanggung ninth graders in the academic year 2023/2024. The samples of this study were two classes of ninth grade students at SMP N 6 Temanggung. The experimental group was 32 students in IX F, and the control group was 32 students from in IX A. The experimental group was taught using PowToon Animation Video, while the control group was taught using picture media. The data were collected using tests: pre-test and post-test. The results were analyzed using t-test and SPSS 22.
After implementing PowToon Animation Video, the writer discovered the effectiveness in the students’ writing skill. Based on the results, the writer concluded that PowToon Animation Video is effective in teaching writing to ninth graders. In addition, the result of the test shows that the t-test is higher that t-table (2.712 >1.999). It means there was a significance difference in writing skill between experimental and control groups. The mean post outcomes indicate the experimental group have better writing skill than control group. The experimental group scored 76, while the control group earned 67. Based on N-Gain calculation, the average improvement achieved by the students who were taught with PowToon Animation Video was 46% in the moderate effectiveness category.
