Textbook plays an important role in the teaching and learning process as the students' main source of knowledge transfer. A textbook does not only provide a framework for teachers to achieve their goals and learning objectives, but also serve as a guide for teachers in carry out learning. This study focuses on analyzing the type of adjective and its function in an English. The formulation of the problems are what are the types and functions of adjectives that are found in the descriptive text of English textbook When English Rings a Bell” for seventh-grade Junior High School. The objectives of the study are to describe the types and functions of adjectives found in the descriptive text of English textbook “When English Rings a Bell” for seventh-grade junior high school.
This is a qualitative research that employs content analyzis technique. The object of this research was descriptive text that found in Buku Guru Bahasa Inggris When English Rings a Bell” written by Wachidah et al. (2017) and published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Classification table was used as the research instrument to classify the types and the functions of the adjective. This study applied document analysis. The data validity was tested by investigator triangulation. The study results were identified that there were 5 descriptive texts in chapter III, IV, V, VI and VII with 72 data. The adjective types that found mostly were limiting adjective (33 data or 45,8%), descriptive adjective (32 data or 44,4%), possessive adjective (6 data or 8,3%), interrogative adjective (1 data or 1,4%) while no data was found for distributive adjective. The adjective functions that found mostly had function to attribute or qualify people, animals, things, or places in order to describe their features (33 data or 45,8%), to express possession of a noun by someone or something (6 data or 8,3%), and to modify nouns by using interjection words (1 data or 1,4%).
From the results can be concluded that the types of adjective that are found are descriptive adjective, limiting adjective, interrogative adjective, and possesive adjective. While ditributive adjective type is not found in this research. The functions of adjectives that are used in the descriptive text of English textbook are to attribute or qualify people, animals, things, or places in order to describe their features, to express possession of a noun by someone or something, and to modify nouns by using interjection words. Teachers should give more knowledge about adjective types and functions in order to increase the students’ ability in undersatnding and writing descriptive text.
